The different types of distracted driving in Maryland

Many of us recognize using our cell phones as a form of distracted driving, but did you know that there are many different types of distracted driving in Maryland that may contribute to a driver’s manual, visual, and cognitive impairment. Distracted driving is extremely dangerous and even deadly and it is important that drivers recognize the different forms of distracted driving to keep themselves and others safe. According to the United States Government here are some common behaviors that constitute distracted driving:

  • Texting
  • Using a cell phone or smartphone while driving
  • Eating or drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading (includes maps_
  • Using a navigation system
  • Watching a video
  • Adjusting the radio 

All of these forms of distracted driving can be categorized into three separate categories.

The 3 Types of Distracted Driving in Maryland

Manual Distractions:

A manual distraction is categorized as a task that involves the driver taking one or both hands off of the wheel in order to perform a task. This include but are not limited to: eating or drinking, helping a passenger, adjusting the radio or temperature in a car. 

Visual Distractions:

A visual distraction is when the driver partakes in any activity that causes their eyes to wander off of the road. These include scenarios like texting, looking at the navigation system, looking at billboards or advertisements, or looking at other cars on the road.

Cognitive Distractions:

A cognitive distraction is a distraction that causes the driver to lose focus. This includes the use of hands-free calling devices, talking to other passengers, daydreaming, or listening o the radio.
