Bring your big hats! One of the most popular events in Maryland will be underway this weekend in the Preakness Stakes horse race. It is the 2nd leg of the annual Triple Crown, the first leg took place at the Kentucky Derby on May 6th. The winner of the first race was a field favorite, Always Dreaming, who has ⅘ odds coming into the race on Saturday.
Maryland has had a storied history with horse racing. Not only do they host one of the premier horse races of the year in the Preakness, Maryland also holds the Hunt Cup every year, which recently made a segment on 60 Minutes on CBS. Horse Racing was one of the most prominent sports in Maryland dating back to even the colonial days, and is still vibrant today. One of the greatest horse races in history, between Seabiscuit and War Admiral, happened in Baltimore in 1938.
Even today we see some of Baltimore’s most famous people, such as Kevin Plank, CEO and Founder of Under Armour, involved in the horse racing and breeding. In the last few years, he has bought a huge horse farm in Hunt Valley. There are even a number of restaurants and bars that pay homage to the horse racing heritage of Baltimore - and even a golf course in Ocean City called GlenRiddle, which was once a horse tracks used to train elite thoroughbreds, have transformed into courses that are named after some of the best that trained there, War Admiral and Man O’War.
But as the coveted weekend of the Preakness Stakes draws near, the media and it’s fans will be buzzing about the race. Whether you are in the infield of the racetrack, in the grandstands, or watching from home, the race will give the fans an adrenaline filled 2 minutes of Baltimore racing. So who will win?
