The Baltimore City Police, and their Gun Task Force is currently under trial in federal court. Opening statements were slated for January 23, 2018 where it is expected that Detectives Daniel Hersl and Marcus Taylor will plead not guilty. These officers are fighting accusations that they committed crimes as a part of the Baltimore Police’s elite gun unit. Charges against them include robbing citizens and taking overtime pay for hours they did not work.
Currently six other Baltimore City police officers have plead guilty, and four of them will be called to testify for the government in its case.
The eight offices in total were accused of the following:
- Performing searches without warrants
- Unlawfully invading homes of private citizens
- Robbing both suspects and innocent citizens
- Selling seized drugs on the streets of baltimore city
- Accepting overtime pay for hours they did not work
If convicted of these charges the offices could face a minimum of 20 years and prison, and a maximum of 30 years. A separate officer in the case faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
