“Gun Violence is at an all time high,” Mayor Catherine Pugh stated back in June. And it is true, as we discussed in our previous blog about the Rising Death Toll in Baltimore , the death toll in Maryland is rising at an alarming rate. Baltimore leaders are looking for a way to minimize these shootings, and they are trying to roll out a bill which will punish those who are in possession of an illegal gun in Maryland. This bill would create a mandatory one year sentence for illegal gun possession within 100 yards of a church, school, park, or public building or place.
These Baltimore leaders, including Catherine Pugh, are doing their best to restrict the possession of illegal firearms, while still abiding by the Maryland State Law. There are churches and schools on nearly every corner of the city, which would limit the areas in which individuals could have illegal firearms in their possession.
Last year, 318 murders were committed in Baltimore, and of those 318 murders, 84% of those were used by a handgun. There is usually no good intent coming from a person walking around with an illegal firearm.
This is a bill that would essentially be beneficial for everyone. There is no point for an average citizen to have a need for an illegal firearm in their possession. If any firearm is needed, one can simply go through the proper procedures in obtaining a legal firearm.
The bill is still in the proposal stage, and falls within the rights of the Constitution. This story will be continued to be updated as more information comes out about the initial reaction to this proposal.
